Mozambique
Malangatana Ngwenya
From the standpoint of large retrospective shows accompanied by catalogs and text, Malangatana has had more attention than any other African artist. He has had two major retrospectives with catalogs in Portugal. His ability to promote himself on an international level is enhanced by his ability to speak, sing, write songs and write poetry in five different languages. The themes of Malangatana’s often brightly colored works reflect the mythology and witchcraft of his rural youth and the politics of the Mozambiqueian struggle for statehood which he experienced as an urban adult.
